The Guild Challenge for TheMourningProject.com

Each one of the 23,000 pairs of booties is one pixel of the 38′ by 38′ overall design. Each square of the grid represents 100 pairs of booties. Request your pattern today.

TheMourningProject needs your guild’s help to complete the image above by creating a critical piece of the installation image.  This is the idea behind the GUILD CHALLENGE.  Please ask your knitting/crochet/sewing/quilt or other fiber art group or guild to be a part of this huge community art project.  Ask your members to make 100 pairs of booties in colors according to your panels’  specific instructions.  Your guild contribution will be listed on the website.  The challenge is in PDF format below; click on the Download PDF button at the top of the document and share it with your friends.

 Guild Challenge

for TheMourningProject.com

Calling All Fiber Art Guilds:

TheMourningProject.com is a huge community fiber art project to gather 23,000 pairs of handmade black, white, and gray baby booties. Together, these ‘little elegies’ will become part of an art installation to draw attention to the problem of infant mortality in the United States. We need 100 pairs of booties sewn onto panels to create a 38′ square image of a heart with baby feet to illustrate the enormity of this problem.  There are 225 panels in all, with 11,000 pairs already gathered.  The US has the worst infant mortality rate in the developed world and loses 23,000 baby each year. After the exhibitions, wearable booties will be donated to charities.

We need your guild’s help! Ask each guild member to make TEN pairs of baby booties and send them to me. Ten guild members x 10 pairs each = 100 pairs of booties = 1 panel.  With your help, we can complete the 38′ x 38′ installation plan. You can make your booties from any pattern with any embellishment, just make them according in colors (black/white/gray) according to your panel’s pattern . They are a fun, scrappy project and take little time to make. Booties can be knit, sewn, crocheted, or felted. There is no charge or jury process to participate. Click here for a video on how to stitch a pair in 90 seconds.   Click here for links to free patterns on TheMourningProject.com website.

Booties can be knit, sewn, felted, or crocheted. Make them in black, white or gray  according to your panel’s colorway (embellishments/trim can be any color).   Send them as soon as possible to be a part of the spring exhibition at the March of Dimes March for Babies in Phoenix. Request your panel pattern from mary@maryvaneecke.com, and your guild participation will be posted on the website. Thank you for rising to meet the challenge.
